Green Building
Green building, also known as green building or sustainable building is defined as the practice of creating structures using a process that is environmentally responsible and efficient use of resources throughout the life cycle of a building.
When you're building green, they are: location, design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and deconstruction.
Why are people looking into green building? Statistics have shown that homes built green save 39 percent of their total energy consumption, 12 percent of the total water consumption, 68 percent of the total electricity consumption and 38 percent of emissions of carbon dioxide.
The statistics also show that the building sector accounts for 30 to 40 percent of consumption global energy. Over 80 percent of emissions harmful to the environment of the buildings are due to energy consumption during time when the buildings are in use. With this knowledge, green building is to reduce this impact.
Green Building could be said for a philosophy of designing a building that is in harmony with the natural features and resources surrounding the site.
The practice of green building is not only the use of one or two techniques, but a wide range of choice. Green building emphasizes often the use of renewable resources such as using sunlight through passive solar and active techniques solar, planting trees, creating rain gardens, and replenishment of groundwater through permeable concrete rather than conventional concrete or asphalt.
Other ways we build green is to increase the efficiency of the envelope building, the use of high performance windows, high quality insulation in walls, ceilings and floors, windows and walls to guide properly under the sun, awnings up, porches and trees in the shade windows and roofs during the summer while maximizing gains sun in winter and providing solar hot water.
Some green builders go so far as to build local energy production. This may include solar, wind, hydro or biomass.
Reduce and reuse of water is also Another goal of green building. Harvesting rainwater or divert landscaping helps maintain the water supply drinking.
Wastewater can also be minimized by using water conservation devices such as ultra-low flush toilets and showerheads with low flow. Some developments also use the point of use water treatment. The wastewater use and not for Greywater use this site as a site-irrigation can also minimize the demands on the local aquifer.
Use of building materials that are considered green is also a factor in green building. Many are opting for bamboo flooring, rather than traditional wood floors due to the fact bamboo is rapidly renewable. Others use recycled wood, stone, metal or other materials directly or indirectly.
Today, there are a handful of construction products made from recycled materials, such as those used to make compressed earth blocks. Then there are styles of construction such as adobe, rammed earth, straw bale and such that are also considered environmentally friendly buildings.
Finally, Green building aims to reduce wastage of materials during construction. In California, 60% of waste from the state came from commercial buildings.
Green building need not be expensive or complicated. Many manufacturers are now sufficiently versed in the construction green and can make the cost of building green affordable in the forefront of the project and affordable for the duration of maintaining the house.
